| Steak n Shake shields board with bylaw change The Steak n Shake Co.'s board of directors has thrown up a roadblock to a plan by a dissident investor to oust most of its members. San Antonio-based Lion Fund, whose affiliates own more than 8 percent of the Indianapolis company, wants to get two of its representatives elected to the board at the company's annual meeting, and then to call a special meeting to replace most of the board with its own slate of directors. But directors have amended company bylaws to require 80-percent shareholder support for calling a special meeting.
Ryder to distribute school supplies at Plainfield As many as 90 jobs will be created as a result of Ryder System Inc.'s recent agreement to distribute educational materials for K12 Inc. from Ryder's warehouse in Plainfield, according to the Indiana Economic Development Corp. Ryder, headquartered in Miami, received $139,000 in state incentives for the expansion at Plainfield Business Center at Airwest. Publicly traded K12 is based in Herdon, Va., and sells curriculum and online services to home schoolers and public schools.

| | FDA questions sedation with Lilly drug Federal regulators today said a longer-lasting version of Eli Lilly's schizophrenia drug Zyprexa appears effective, though a small number of patients experienced excessive sleepiness. The Food and Drug Administration posted its review of Zyprexa Adhera ahead of a Wednesday panel meeting, where psychiatric drug advisers will vote on whether the drug is safe and effective. Zyprexa is currently available as a once-daily pill to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Nytes named head of Mapleton Fall Creek City-County Council representative Jackie Nytes has been hired as executive director of Mapleton Fall Creek Development Corp., the neighborhood group announced today. Nytes replaces Shary Johnston, who is retiring. Nytes was a finalist to replace former Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library CEO Linda Mielke, who left in January 2007.
M&I signs go on First Indiana branches today The $529 million takeover of First Indiana Corp. ripples to 32 branch locations today, as Milwaukee-based Marshall & Ilsley Corp. hoists its M&I Bank signs into place. Shareholders of First Indiana OK'd the acquisition in December. M&I's Indiana region president is Reagan Rick, who had been with First Indiana for three years. He previously worked for three other banks and a couple of law firms, all in Indiana.
Kentucky may add tolls to bridges into Indiana Kentucky might charge tolls on bridges that connect to Indiana, reports The Evening News of Jeffersonville. In a study released late last week, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet included eight options ranging from adding tolls to all bridges to just one bridge. The tolls would help pay for the $4.1 billion Ohio River Bridges Project, which seeks to build two new bridges in the Louisville area. The study stops short of recommendations.
Veneer company blaze draws 150 firefighters Firefighters are watching for hotspots after a weekend fire destroyed a southern Indiana wood products company. Officials at Norstam Veneers Inc. in Mauckport vow to continue operations after the fire that destroyed four interconnected warehouses filled with lumber. The cause has not been determined. More than 150 firefighters and at least 60 pieces of equipment responded to the blaze in the community about 30 miles southwest of Louisville on Saturday night.
Dow outperformed other world indexes The Dow Jones industrial average weathered a string of bad economic news in January better than any of the world's large stock markets. The month stirred more talk of a possible recession, the housing downturn got worse and the value of the dollar fell - not to mention the biggest downturn that the U.S. stock market has sustained in 18 years. Still, the Dow industrials lost only 4.6 percent of its value.

| Woman dies after being ejected from car Police say a woman died this morning after her car hit something on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street exit ramp on Interstate 65, and she was thrown from the vehicle. Her name has not been released. Fox 59 will have the latest at 10 p.m.
East-side facility busy making championship shirts Workers at the Reebok facility on Indianapolis' east side are making Super Bowl championship gear featuring the New York Giants. Production on the shirts and hats began once the game ended. The championship apparel will be on store shelves today.
Bill could expand voting centers The Indiana House is considering a bill that would allow any county to create voting centers. Voters would be allowed to cast their ballots at these polling sites regardless of their precincts. Secretary of State Todd Rokita supports the bill, saying it allows people to vote using 21st century technology.
IU introduces podcast Web site Indiana University unveiled its new podcast Web site today. Podcast.iu.edu will give users access to lectures, music, radio broadcasts and student profiles. Contributors to the site include the IU Alumni Association, the Jacobs School of Music and public radio stations.
