Ambitious Brownsburg project withdrawn
A Virginia company says it has temporarily withdrawn its ambitious plans to build a hospital and hotel complex east of Brownsburg. Joe Cross, the construction manager for Metropolitan Medical Care Inc., confirmed today that the company has temporarily withdrawn its request for zoning approval from the Hendricks County Planning Commission, but that it intends the withdrawal to last only 30 days.   Full Story

Conseco shareholder rattles saber
Warren G. Lichtenstein, who has made a name for himself by launching hostile takeovers, has made his dissatisfaction with Conseco Inc. public in a Securities and Exchange filing. Lichtenstein said he plans to review investment in the Carmel insurer by his Steel Partners II fund and start discussions with Conseco managers and directors "concerning the business, operations and future plans." Steel Partners might seek a board seat and propose different ownership structures, the filing said.   Full Story

Sallie Mae warns against abandoning buyout
Sallie Mae, the student lender based in Virginia, issued a statement today saying it expects a group of investors to follow through on a $25 billion acquisition agreement. The statement was a response to New York Times article today that said the consortium of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., Bank of America and two private investment funds intends to negotiate a lower price or walk away from the deal. Sallie Mae employs 2,300 workers in Fishers and another 500 in Muncie.

WFYI lands key Kresge contribution
The Kresge Foundation has committed $900,000 to WFYI, a key contribution that could help the Indianapolis public radio and television broadcaster polish off a $20.2 million campaign to help it complete a transition to digital broadcasting. If WFYI can raise a final $2.2 million, Kresge will become the last contributor, bringing the total to $20.2 million, WFYI President and CEO Lloyd Wright announced this morning.   Full Story

Commission funds Chakaia Booker art display
The Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission today approved funding intended to pay for a public art display of Chakaia Booker sculptures in Indianapolis next year. The commission gave the Arts Council of Indianapolis the OK to pull $85,000 from this year's budget and committed to approving another $165,000 from 2008's budget for the project. The council is still in talks with the New York-based artist, who creates abstract sculptures from steel frames and cut tires.   Full Story

Clarian might build northwest Indiana hospital
Clarian Health Partners is negotiating with Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute in Chesterton about the possibility of creating a health care campus in northwest Indiana, according to the Post-Tribune of Merrillville. Indianapolis-based Clarian said the campus would include an orthopedic hospital.   Full Story

Illinois casino plans threaten Indiana casinos
After having survived the recent opening of Four Winds casino in nearby New Buffalo, Mich., northwest Indiana casinos now face another threat-the possibility of Illinois lawmakers allowing three gambling venues to open to help fund the Chicago-area's mass-transit system. If Illinois proceeds, the Indiana casinos, which recently spent heavily on upgrades to fend off Four Winds, likely would embark on another round of investment, according to the Post-Tribune of Merrillville. Still, Indiana Gaming Insight publisher Ed Feigenbaum told the newspaper that the Chicago market is so large that the Indiana casinos might fare well even if they make few changes.

Pump maker expanding in Kendallville
Flint & Walling Inc. plans to add 25 workers to its current roster of 130 at its headquarters in Kendallville in northeastern Indiana, the Indiana Economic Development Corp. said today. The $5 million expansion includes additional manufacturing and warehouse space. The company, which makes pumps, is owned by Louisville-based Zoeller Co. Flint & Walling has operated in Kendallville since 1866.

Work on Benton County wind farm begins
Construction has started in the fields of northwest Indiana's Benton County on 87 turbines that would be part of the state's first electricity-generating wind farm. Some farmers have cut down part of their crops to make room for the Benton Wind Farm turbines. Preliminary work began in late July in setting concrete foundations for the turbines, building roads to them and running electrical cables.   Full Story

IPS meeting to discuss school closings
Indianapolis Public School officials are considering the closure of several schools now that they know enrollment numbers have fallen. They've been discussing closing Forest Manor Middle School and schools 68 and 92 while consolidating schools 102 and 103. Officials will conduct a public meeting to talk about those plans at Forest Manor Middle School at 7 p.m. Fox 59 will have the latest at 10 p.m.

Triple murder suspect to appear in court
The Indianapolis man accused of stabbing his mother and her two foster sons to death last weekend appeared in court this morning. The Marion County prosecutor says he may ask for Sean Wright to face the death penalty or life in prison without parole. DNA evidence is under review.

State reports first West Nile death of 2007
State health officials have confirmed the year's first known West Nile death in Indiana. It happened in Floyd County. Officials also say two people have contracted the mosquito-borne illness in Lake and Vanderburgh counties, bringing the number of confirmed cases in Indiana this year to 10.

Judge will not suppress evidence in Trudeau case
A Boone County judge ruled that the Facebook page of Jack Trudeau's daughter can be used as evidence in the case against him. Lawyers for the former Colts quarterback also asked the judge to throw out evidence collected during a police search of his house in June, but the judge also denied that request. Trudeau is charged with obstruction of justice and supplying alcohol to minors.

M-Plan couldn't find buyer for HMO
Before the owners of M-Plan Inc. decided to shut down the large HMO, they tried for two years to sell it. But no dice. In spite of M-Plan's consistent profits and 125,000 customers, its president, Alex Slabosky, said it couldn't come to terms with a buyer. M-Plan's parent company, The HealthCare Group LLC, announced earlier this month that it would phase out its health maintenance organization business. It recommended that its employer clients transfer their workers to Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.   Full Story   Full Story
