Hilbert mansion fetches $20M asking price
The newly formed Carmel Institute has offered $20 million for the former Hilbert mansion, according to a source familiar with the bid. That bid matches Conseco Inc.'s asking price for the mansion, which has been on the market for two years. Conseco won control of the residence during a court battle with former CEO Steve Hilbert over company-backed loans Hilbert used to buy Conseco stock but never fully repaid.   Full Story

Analyst: Finish Line under Genesco heel

Genesco Inc.'s hard line toward Finish Line Inc. likely means the Indianapolis company has no choice but to go forward with its $1.5 billion acquisition of the Tennessee firm. That was the take of a Wall Street analyst this morning after Nashville-based Genesco announced it had sued Finish Line to try to force it to close the deal. "It's still the belief this deal gets done," said Christopher Svezia, an analyst with Susquehanna International Group LLP in New York.   Full Story

Company scouting cities for 500-job call center
Anderson is one of four mid-sized cities an information technology company is considering as a site for a 500-employee call center, according to the Herald Bulletin. The Anderson Redevelopment Commission called a special meeting last night to consider an unnamed company's request that the city spend $850,000 to upgrade an existing building it wants to occupy. Sallie Mae, WellPoint Inc. and IBM have passed over Anderson for call centers because renovating a facility would have been too expensive.   Full Story

Carmel head lice startup lands $2.1M grant
ParaPRO LLC, a startup specialty pharmaceutical company that's developing a novel treatment for head lice, has received a $2.1 million grant from the 21st Century Research and Technology Fund, the Indiana Economic Development Corp. announced today. The grant will allow the Carmel company to complete clinical trials of its medicine to treat head lice and their eggs. The new therapy is based on a compound developed at Eli Lilly and Co. called Spinosad. ParaPRO acquired rights to use it for lice treatment in 2002.   Full Story

Court sides with locals in Guidant suit
The state's second-highest appeals court is allowing a class-action lawsuit involving Guidant Corp. defibrillators to proceed in Marion County, though the ruling won't affect similar federal or state suits. A three-judge Indiana Court of Appeals panel decided yesterday that two people could continue a class-action product liability lawsuit against Guidant over now-recalled defibrillators or pacemakers, according to the Indiana Lawyer.   Full Story

Home prices hold steady, sales drop

Average sale prices for central Indiana homes rose slightly in August, but the number of homes sold dropped 18.5 percent from the same month last year, according to a report issued today by the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors. Total home sales year-to-date are down about 8 percent from the same period during 2006. The average sale price was $155,889 in August, a 0.6-percent increase. About 2,600 homes were sold in August. "The housing market has tightened, but the good news is that prices in central Indiana have held steady," MIBOR President Kevin Kirkpatrick said in a statement.

Coachmen shifting work to Indiana from Ohio
Coachmen Industries Inc., the Elkhart-based maker of recreational vehicles and manufactured housing, will close its Zanesville, Ohio, plant and move the work to a plant in Decatur, Ind. The Ohio plant, which makes All-American Homes, will be shuttered within 60 days in response to weak market conditions, according to Bloomberg.

ArvinMeritor to turn out lights in Columbus
Arvin Industries was once one of Columbus, Ind.'s largest employers and a corporate pillar in the southern Indiana city. But the auto parts maker that absorbed it in 2000 plans to shutter Arvin's last presence there by the end of this year. Columbus Mayor Fred Armstrong was notified by e-mail this week that Michigan-based ArvinMeritor Inc. soon will cease operations at its Corporate Information Technology Center, according to The Republic of Columbus. The facility had 63 employees as recently as March.   Full Story

Man arrested in Anderson death
The man who called police to report finding 14-year-old Amanda Brinker dead in an Anderson park now is under arrest. Jesse Lee Pitts, 20, called 911. An autopsy will be performed on Brinker later today. Fox 59 will air the 911 call at 10 p.m.
Peterson to unveil dog fighting measure
Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson is expected to make a major announcement today in the city's effort to stop dog fighting. Indianapolis Animal Care and Control has been working with local, national and federal agencies on a dog fighting task force. The team has made one arrest.

Man dies in northeast-side shooting
Police say two suspects opened fire on Cornelius Stamps, 28, and Earl Henton, 31, last night in the 2900 block of North Euclid Avenue on the northeast side. Stamps died shortly after arriving at Wishard Hospital. At least 20 shells were recovered at the scene. The suspects were last seen in a white Chevy Lumina with dark-tinted windows.

Police look for suspect wanted in east-side attack
Matthew Woods, 19, is accused of attacking an elderly woman outside a Kohl's store in Lawrence on Sept. 14. Police say Woods knocked the woman to the ground, then dragged her as she held on to her purse. The 71-year-old victim was left with scrapes, bruises and a dislocated ankle.
