| Janitors launch strike at Mansur Tower Janitors working in Mansur Tower downtown walked off the job yesterday in their ongoing attempt to organize under the Service International Employees Union. Union backers have complained for months that the company that cleans the tower, Executive Management Services, is discouraging its workers from joining the union. Both the union and the Indianapolis janitorial company have accused the other of harassment and intimidation.
Cross-country course launched downtown Officials for the Indiana Invaders track and running club and the city of Indianapolis announced yesterday that a championship cross-country course and training venue will be developed along the banks of the White River downtown. Ground was broken this week on the project, which is being financially supported by locally based retailer The Finish Line, St. Vincent Sports Performance Center and the End Result Co., a Carmel race-timing and -scoring company. The $100,000 facility is expected to open next August.

| | Frick returns to Baker & Daniels David Frick, chairman of the Indiana Stadium and Convention Building Authority, is rejoining Baker & Daniels LLP. The 63-year-old Frick, who will continue leading the authority, left the law firm as managing partner in 1992 after a 20-year career there. He retired from WellPoint Inc. a few years ago. His corporate practice will concentrate on mergers, acquisitions and transactions. The authority oversees construction of Lucas Oil Stadium and expansion of the Indiana Convention Center.
Shareholders OK sale of WFBQ owner Shareholders of the company that owns WFBQ-FM 94.7 and two other Indianapolis radio stations yesterday approved a $19.5 billion acquisition offer from a group of private-equity firms. In addition to the local classic rock powerhouse, Clear Channel Communications Inc. owns local alternative rock station WRZX-FM 103.3 and WNDE-AM 1260, which broadcasts a sports format. Clear Channel is headquartered in San Antonio.
Mexican fast-food firm eyes Indianapolis Del Taco, a fast-food restaurant specializing in Mexican foods, plans to open about 16 locations in the Indianapolis area. Honda jobs to start at $14.84 an hour The pay system to be used by Honda Manufacturing of Indiana at its new assembly plant in Greensburg will start workers at $14.84 an hour and automatically ratchet up wages over two years to $18.55. The Japanese automaker also plans to include annual bonuses based on how individuals perform and how the company fares, according to the Greensburg Daily News. Honda nearly a month ago began fielding the first of what totaled 30,296 applications for 2,000 production positions. The $550 million plant, which will turn out Civic sedans, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2008. Furniture maker shifting work to Honduras Child Craft Industries, a family-owned company in New Salisbury that has made cribs and other child-related furniture for nearly a century, will lay off most of its work force and shift production to Honduras. The layoff of about 80 workers at the southern Indiana location is expected to take place between next month and September 2009, according to a filing with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

| Viral meningitis spreads in Boone County Health officials are investigating a meningitis scare in Boone County. The county health department says at least seven students have come down with the viral form of the disease this school year. Lebanon School Superintendent Robert Taylor says a middle school football player student was the first to contract the illness last week. The school district has taken measures to prevent the disease from spreading.
Man accused in abduction to be charged today A man accused of kidnapping his estranged wife will be formally charged today. Hancock County investigators say Ron Thomas abducted his wife and left their three young children at home alone yesterday. A man who knows the couple convinced Thomas to let his wife go. She is home safe. Thomas was arrested by U.S. marshals in Anderson and is in the Hancock County Jail.
State receives addiction-recovery grant The Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction has received a $14.5 million grant to help drug addicts in seven counties, including Marion. Officials plan to use more than $4 million to help methamphetamine users. The rest will help addicts just released from prison, and current or expecting mothers.
Kosene sees reasons for optimism in slow housing market Kosene and Kosene has a buyer for the first of 105 condominiums that will make up the residential portion of its downtown mixed-use project, The Maxwell. Kosene began trying to sell Maxwell units less than a month ago. Overall, the company is optimistic about its six local residential projects because of sales activity in the last three months.
