Public policy research organization shuttered
The Indiana Fiscal Policy Institute, Indiana's only statewide organization devoted to independent government research, is on the cusp of collapse. Steve Johnson, its CEO, told IBJ this morning he has stepped down due to lack of funding. The organization regularly provides detailed public-policy analysis reports on key questions before the General Assembly.   Full Story

Realtors call for cutting property taxes
The Indiana Association of Realtors today called for shifting some reliance on property taxes to other revenue sources, but stopped short of advocating eliminating the tax. The trade group also called for eliminating the township assessment system and reforming "antiquated" local government.   Full Story

Cohesant profit jumps to record high
Profit at Cohesant Technologies Inc. increased nearly 14 percent in the third quarter, to $431,443, the Indianapolis company reported today. Cohesant, which protects and repairs water and wastewater systems, cited revenue gains across its business segments for the increase. Revenue rose to $8.3 million in the quarter, from $6.4 million a year earlier.

Janitorial company: We'll work despite strike
Waste baskets won't overflow at Market Tower because of the strike that janitors launched Sept. 25, according to an attorney who represents the company contracted to clean the building, Executive Management Services. The attorney, Dave Swider, said other employees from the Indianapolis janitorial firm will be brought in to perform the work. "We could do this as long as we need to," Swider said.   Full Story

Local support key to intermodal site, exec warns
The LaPorte area has about everything necessary for an intermodal facility, the director of CSX Intermodal said during the annual Indiana Logistics Summit in Indianapolis yesterday. The key to landing an intermodal project is community support, Michael Gallis said. However, while economic developers and other officials in the northwest Indiana city back the idea, many landowners and others living near proposed sites do not, the Post-Tribune of Merrillville reported.   Full Story

Hoosiers affected by nationwide recalls
Several different recalls could affect drivers and parents with young children. Kolcraft is recalling about 425,000 play yards after a baby was strangled by a restraint strap on the changing table. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling more than 600,000 toys and necklaces made in China with dangerous levels of lead. Toyota and Nissan also issued safety recalls involving vehicles sold across the nation and here in Indiana. For more information, go to www.fox59.com. Fox 59 will have the latest at 10 p.m.

Man accused of abduction appears in court
A Hancock County man accused of kidnapping his estranged wife Sept. 25 had an initial hearing this morning. Police say Ron Thomas, 40, kidnapped Allison Thomas, 35, from a New Palestine home. Allison was safely returned 12 hours later after a friend of the couple convinced the suspect to release her.


Bodies found in southern Indiana
Indiana State Police are investigating suspicious deaths of a couple found in their home in Austin. Police went to the southern Indiana home after relatives expressed concern because they hadn't heard from the couple, whose names have been withheld. Autopsies were scheduled this morning.

Hospital reviewing employee bite accusations
A St. Vincent Hospital lab technician has been fired for allegedly biting a child's shoulder. The boy's mother says the tech put her mouth on the 3-year-old to restrain him during a blood test. Charges have not been filed.

Lilly, Emisphere settle protracted dispute
Eli Lilly and Co. has agreed to pay $18 million to settle a bitter dispute with New York-based Emisphere Technologies Inc. Emisphere announced the settlement agreement Sept. 26, but gave no details. In January 2006, a judge ruled that Indianapolis-based Lilly breached its contract with Emisphere as the two worked to develop oral versions of Lilly's injectible osteoporosis drug Forteo. Since then the companies have continued litigating over whether Lilly breached Emisphere's patents and whether it owed damages.   Full Story   Full Story
