| Indiana members join in UAW strike against GM The United Auto Workers has launched a national strike against General Motors Corp., GM spokesman Dan Flores said today. It's the first nationwide strike during auto contract negotiations since 1976, when Ford Motor Co. plants were shut down. Workers walked off the job and began picketing today outside GM plants after the 11 a.m. UAW strike deadline passed. In Indiana, GM has 5,665 workers at four plants, including a stamping operation just west of downtown.
Speedway-based Zipp to be acquired Officials for Speedway-based Zipp Speed Weaponry announced Sept. 21 that they have signed a letter of intent to be acquired by Chicago-based SRAM Corp. Both companies design and manufacture high-end bicycle components. Zipp will maintain its headquarters on Main Street in Speedway, said company president Andy Ording. There will be no lay-offs at Zipp and the management staff, including Ording, who is also part of current ownership, will stay in place. Ording, 48, will report to SRAM CEO Stan Day. | | | | |
| | Genesco breached deal, Finish Line says Genesco Inc. is breaching terms of its deal to sell to locally based Finish Line Inc., Finish Line said this morning. The statement from Finish Line was its first official response to last week's lawsuit filed by Genesco, which seeks to force Finish Line to close on the $1.5 billion deal. Finish Line said Genesco is withholding certain financial information from Finish Line and won't grant it access to Genesco's chief financial officer and other financial staff.
Former lottery chief discriminated, suit claims The Hoosier Lottery's former corporate general counsel is suing the lottery, claiming she was discriminated against because she is disabled. Janna J. Shisler, a quadriplegic, asserts in the suit that former lottery director Esther Q. Schneider made working conditions so intolerable that she quit. Schneider was appointed lottery director in January 2005 by Gov. Mitch Daniels. Her successor, Kathryn Densborn, was appointed last December.
Lilly sues to stop generic Strattera Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co. is suing Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. of India to stop Sun from selling a generic version of Lilly's hyperactivity-disorder drug Strattera. Lilly, which filed the suit in Detroit on Sept. 20, said it would be "irreparably harmed" if the generic wasn't stopped, according to Bloomberg. Sun's application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says Lilly's patent is invalid, unenforceable or uninfringed. Strattera treats attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and generated $282 million in sales in the first half of this year for Lilly.
Envelope printer to expand in Angola Wolf Envelope Co. will invest at least $1.8 million and hire 26 additional workers over four years at its envelope printing operation in Angola, Indiana Economic Development Corp. said today. Wolf, based in Troy, Mich., will add high-speed color jet printers at the northeast-Indiana site. The plant employs 82 who print 1 billion envelopes a year. The company received commitments from the state for as much as $158,000 in incentives.

56th Street ramp closed for road work A 56th Street exit ramp on I-465 has been closed for 30 days while crews rebuild the road as part of the Accelerate 465 project on the far west side. Indiana transportation officials recommend using the 71st Street exits or the I-74/Crawfordsville Road interchange as alternatives. | | | |
| Purdue tests emergency text messaging Purdue University is testing how well text messaging works for issuing emergency alerts in what is thought to be the first large-scale test of its kind. Researchers have lined up more than 7,000 volunteers to accept and respond to the text messages. Fox 59 will have more on this at 10 p.m.
Search continues for missing Lilly sales rep Police are following several leads in their search for Nailah Franklin, 28, an Eli Lilly and Co. sales representative who hasn't been seen or heard from since Sept. 18. Police are looking into threatening calls the Chicago woman received had been receiving. On Sept. 21, investigators found her car in Hammond. Some of her belongings were found near a pond at a Calumet City golf course, also in northwest Indiana.
Bayh to announce his pick for president Sen. Evan Bayh is expected to endorse New York Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential bid today, according to sources close to both camps. Bayh has worked with Clinton on the Senate Armed Services Committee and they traveled to Iraq and Afghanistan together earlier this year. | | | | |
