| Nightclub Eyes Union Station The city has reached a preliminary agreement to lease 12,600 square feet in the basement of Union Station for a new restaurant and nightclub. The lease is with The Arantee Group, an owner of 6 Lounge & Restaurant on Meridian Street. Colby's House On Market For $1.6M Former WellPoint Inc. executive David C. Colby is asking $1.6 million for his house at 3148 N. Pennsylvania St. WellPoint ousted Colby as its vice chairman and chief financial officer May 30 for undisclosed personal conduct violations. The historic home is owned by Colby and Angela Doan, who called herself his wife. Colby's departure came days after a California woman who also used Colby's last name sued him for allegedly reneging on a promise to give her his $4.4 million house outside Los Angeles. | | | | |
| | Notre Dame, IU Rise In Journal Rankings MBA programs at three Indiana universities ranked in the top 20 of The Wall Street Journal 's top regional business schools for 2007. The ranking tracks opinions of corporate recruiters. Indiana University's Kelley School of Business was 5th, moving up 10 spots from last year. Purdue University's Krannert School of Management ranked 12th, having placed 5th in 2006. And University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business ranked 14th this year, up from 28th in 2006. The corporate recruiters surveyed assess 21 attributes, including curriculum content, leadership potential and strategic thinking.
Beckman Coulter Seeks $644,000 in Incentives Centrifuge maker Beckman Coulter Inc. expects to add about 120 jobs at a new facility on West 76th Street and has applied for tax abatements worth a total of about $644,000. The Fullerton, Calif.-based company announced in January that it planned to move its Palo Alto facility to Indianapolis to cut costs and improve staff recruitment and retention.
AT&T to Announce 475 New Jobs in Indiana AT&T is announcing today plans to create jobs for 475 service technician who will install and upgrade the company's fiber-optic network to provide a cable TV-style service to homes. AT&T Indiana President George Fleetwood and Gov. Mitch Daniels are scheduled to announce details of the plan today in Anderson. AT&T has been in expansion mode in Indiana since the General Assembly passed legislation last year making it easier for traditional telephone companies to compete with cable companies.
Cook To Expand Spencer Manufacturing Plant Cook Medical said yesterday it will add 50,000 square feet to its 104,000-square-foot facility in Spencer that manufactures devices for its Urological and Women's Health divisions. It's too early to know what the project will cost or how much hiring will result, said Dave McCarty, spokesman for Bloomington-based Cook. The plant employs 300.
Environmental Group Worries Evansville Firm Bernardin Lochmueller & Associates Inc., the Evansville civil engineering firm that's leading consulting work on the extension of Interstate 69, has warned other consulting firms and local police that the environmental group Earth First is ramping up its opposition to the road project, according to the Evansville Courier & Press. In the 1990s, Earth First gained notoriety for sitting in trees and other exploits to protest logging.

| Tax Panel Hears From Frustrated Landlords A state property tax reform panel heard yesterday from frustrated landlords who say it's unfair that their properties don't get the same tax breaks as owner-occupied homes. Sen. Luke Kenley, who chairs the Commission on State Tax and Finance Policy, said he wants to find a way to help landlords. One option, he said, would be a cap on rental property taxes similar to one that will be offered to homeowners who live in a house as their primary residence. The commission, which is exploring ways of reducing local government's reliance on property taxes, may have recommendations for the General Assembly to consider during the 2008 legislative session.
Regenstrief Donates $2.5M to Purdue Purdue University has received another shot of money to find ways to use engineering principles to improve health care. The Regenstrief Foundation has donated $2.45 million to improve cancer care, patient scheduling, and phone- and internet-based health care, Purdue officials announced this morning.

| Council OKs Mayor's budget The City-County Council passed Mayor Bart Peterson's 2008 budget yesterday. The budget of just over $1 billion cuts property tax-funded spending by $50 million but relies on a 65 percent increase in income taxes previously approved the Council. Overall spending will rise $2 million.
E. Coli Fears Cause Lettuce Recall Dole Food Co. is recalling Heart Delight Salad Mix bagged lettuce after a sample tested positive for E. coli. The lettuce was sold in Indiana and several other Midwestern states. The packages have a "best if used by date" of Sept. 19 and production codes A24924A or A24924B.
Indiana Guard Receives Marching Orders Officials call it the largest single call up of Indiana troops since World War II. About 3,400 members of the 76th Infantry Brigade have received their mobilization orders. Included are units from Indianapolis, Columbus, Fort Wayne and other areas. The troops leave for Iraq in early 2008 and will be deployed overseas for about a year.
Police: Teenage Mom Drove Getaway Car A teenage mother is accused of leading police on a short chase with her 16-month-old child in the back of the car. Beech Grove police arrested Abby Gail Brown, 18, the night of Sept. 16. Officers say she acted as a getaway driver for Zachary Willis after he robbed the Murphy Oil Station on Emerson Avenue.
