Plainfield lands 1,400 jobs at FoxConn
FoxConn Electronics Inc., an electronics assembly and storage company based in Taiwan, will create 1,400 jobs at its computer assembly site in Plainfield, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels said today. Separately, the governor's office said Taiwan-owned Asustek Computer International will create 300 jobs in Jeffersonville by shifting the service and help desk work from Louisville. Daniels made the announcements as he departed on a trade mission to Japan.   Full Story

Federal lobbying cost Lilly $2M in first half of '07
Eli Lilly and Co. spent nearly $2 million to lobby the federal government in the first half of 2007, the Associated Press reported today. The Indianapolis-based drugmaker lobbied on issues related to patent reform, intellectual property, counterfeiting, prescription drug user fees, health care reform and Medicare, according to a form posted online by the Senate's public records office. Besides Congress, Lilly also lobbied several federal agencies including the Food and Drug Administration.

Thousands seek Honda jobs at Greensburg
More than 23,000 people already have applied for jobs at the $550 million Honda Manufacturing of Indiana plant under construction in southeastern Indiana. The company began accepting applications for production jobs on Aug. 26. Sept. 9 is the deadline for potential workers to be considered for a round of hiring to begin this fall. Honda plans to produce 200,000 Civic sedans a year after its new factory reaches full production.   Full Story

Lauth closes on land for huge distribution park
A long-planned distribution park at Interstate 70 and State Road 39 in Hendricks County can go forward now that Lauth Property Group has closed on the purchase of 555 acres it has assembled at the northeast corner of the intersection. As IBJ reported a year ago, Westpoint Business Park will have 10 warehouses.   Full Story

Shelbyville bank company delisting from NASDAQ
Blue River Bancshares Inc. said yesterday it will delist its stock from NASDAQ to save money. Blue River shares have been mired between $4 and $7 since early in the decade and closed at $5.03 yesterday. Blue River operates Shelby County Bank in Shelbyville and Paramount Bank in Lexington, Ky.   Full Story

Nursing 'hottest' Indianapolis-area job, state says
A new index compiled by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development predicts nursing will be the job most in demand in the state until 2014. Paxton buys third Indiana newspaper
Small Newspaper Group is selling its LaPorte County Herald-Argus daily newspaper to Paxton Media Group, which owns a competing daily in the same county. It is Paxton Media's third purchase of an Indiana newspaper in five months and will give it 11 papers in the state. The company bought The Herald-Press of Huntington in April and the Chronicle-Tribune of Marion in July.   Full Story

IUPUI student reports assault
IUPUI sent an e-mail warning to the entire campus after a student said a man sexually assaulted her on school grounds. Police are now looking for the suspect. The woman told police a man wearing all black grabbed her the night of Sept. 4 near the east side of Ball Residence. Fox 59 News will have more at 10 p.m.

Teen killed in crash
Two brothers are recovering after a one-car accident at 71st Street and Guion Road last night that killed one person. Rickey Shamblin, 19, died at the scene. Javon Spencer, 18, and Jarrell Spencer, 11, had to be removed from the vehicle and taken to Methodist Hospital. Investigators believe their car rolled after veering off the road.

Kickoff cleanup behind schedule
Wet weather slowed plans to reopen Monument Circle to traffic this morning. Crews now believe it will open around 3 p.m. Almost 100,000 people attended kickoff festivities on the Circle yesterday. City officials and fans say the party could lay the groundwork for a bid to bring the 2012 Super Bowl to Indianapolis.

Carmel takes over part of Keystone Avenue
Gov. Mitch Daniels joined Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard yesterday to announce that the city of Carmel now owns Keystone Avenue from 96th Street to U.S. 431. The city plans to rebuild the road. Portions of it will be lowered and elevated roundabouts, costing $12 million a piece, will be built at intersections to get rid of traffic signals.

The city has an equity stake in the Conrad Hotel but didn't structure its investment to require regular reports of the hotel's performance. Are city investments in private projects appropriate? How should oversight of its investments be handled?
