Honda hiring could drive up wages
Manufacturers within a half-hour's drive of Greensburg might have to boost pay for their workers by 5 percent to 10 percent to compete with the Honda Manufacturing Indiana assembly plant now under construction, said the president of a prominent company that supplies temporary workers to manufacturers and warehouses. Gary Hentschel of Personnel Management said the 2,000 production workers Honda has begun hiring will likely be drawn primarily from manufacturers close to the city southeast of Indianapolis.   Full Story

Finish Line same-store sales slide

Comparable-store sales for Finish Line Inc. fell 4.7 percent in the second fiscal quarter, the Indianapolis-based shoe and apparel retailer said yesterday. Profit will be made public when Finish Line releases its earnings report Sept. 27. The company said it expects to report a loss of 4 to 6 cents per share.   Full Story

Midwest little affected by credit crunch, Fed says
Economic activity in the Chicago region expanded modestly in July and August, the Federal Reserve Bank said today in its Beige Book report. The report, which is issued eight times a year based on interviews and other means of gathering information on economic trends, said manufacturing expanded at a slower pace, household lending declined and business lending was flat.   Full Story

Arts incubator launched in Nashville
Brown County's economic development commission has started an incubator for arts-related startups in the county seat of Nashville. The Arts Industry New Business Incubator will have room for six arts-oriented companies, according to the Brown County Democrat. Possibilities include businesses involved in publishing, licensing, auctions, graphic arts and entertainment. Other targeted businesses are involved in marketing, digital arts and media.   Full Story

Report: Cleaning Great Lakes would help economy
A proposed restoration of the Great Lakes would generate at least $50 billion in economic gains-twice as much as the cleanup would cost, according to a report issued yesterday. The analysis by the Washington, D.C.-based Brookings Institution said healing the ecologically ailing lakes would help industries such as tourism and outdoor recreation. It also would boost property values, reduce wastewater treatment costs and attract new residents.   Full Story

Regulators ban Indiana telecom firm from Iowa
Iowa state regulators have prohibited an Indianapolis telecommunications company from providing local telephone service there, saying it made unauthorized changes to customers' phone service. The practice, known as slamming and cramming, will cost Ultimate Medium Communications Corp. $700,000 in fines, the Iowa Utilities Board said yesterday. Slamming is when a customer's calls are moved to another company without authorization. Cramming is causing unauthorized charges to appear on a customer's telephone bill.   Full Story

NFL kickoff game fever hits the Circle City
A pre-game concert on Monument Circle before tonight's Colts-Saints game is set to start at 5:15 p.m. with a performance by Hinder, followed by Kelly Clarkson at 6:05 p.m. and Faith Hill at 7 p.m. John Mellencamp takes the stage at the RCA Dome for the pre-game show at 8 p.m. That show includes the unveiling of a special Super Bowl XLI Championship banner. Fox 59 News will have highlights at 10 p.m.


Fire ignites in abandoned Shelbyville building
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a big fire last night at an abandoned building in Shelbyville. The building in the 600 block of Noble Street used to house a business where metal crates were welded. It was sold last week.

IPS teacher accused of molesting boys
Police arrested Michael Swanson at his Lawrence home yesterday on charged that he engaged in sexual activity with at least three teens between 2000 and 2006. The English teacher was suspended from Arsenal Tech about a week ago. He now faces charges of sexual misconduct, child molestation and battery.

Daniels extends tax deadline, attorney files lawsuit
Gov. Mitch Daniels says has issued an extension that gives homeowners until Oct. 15 to seek the homestead tax deduction on their 2008 property taxes. Meanwhile, a new lawsuit is expected to be filed today over the property tax issue. Attorney John Price will ask the court to examine state tax laws and whether their execution follows the Indiana Constitution.

Kissingers resign Bioanalytical Systems posts
Peter Kissinger, chairman of West Lafayette-based Bioanalytical Systems Inc., has resigned from his position as chief scientific officer. His wife, Candice Kissinger, has resigned as director of research. Both will retain their board positions. The departures were disclosed in a Securities and Exchange filing, but no reason was given. A year ago, Peter Kissinger stepped down as CEO of the struggling drug developer and instrument maker he founded in 1974. He was replaced by Richard Shepperd.   Full Story   Full Story
